VINTAGE Russian Lacquer Boxes Matched SET of FOUR Signed MCTEPA School / Mstera I have owned these since 1992. The stories represented here I believe are from "By the Pike's Wish" and "The Tale of Ivan Tsarevich, the Firebird, and the Gray Wolf" They are signed, the only word I could clearly make out among the signatures was MCTEPA. Through research I discovered MCTEPA was a school out of Mstera.

The Mstera artists are well known for not dating pieces. They must predate his arrival by at least some years, so they are at minimum more than 30 years old. He was about 19 or 20 at the time, and said they were in his home his whole life - so who knows, 30-50? An expert may be able to determine the dating from the signatures or the style. They are perfectly square, very small, 1.5" High x 1.5" Long x 1.5 Deep.

The depth of the painting on such a small space does not translate well to the photographs, they are little jewels. They have some fine tiny hairline cracks in the lacquer which I tried to capture in the photos, otherwise they are perfect.
