Black lacquer is used as the background on the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Palekh. This is an original hand made and hand painted piece of art. Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting which came to an end with the Bolshevik Revolution and the collapse of Imperial Russia.
The icon painters, who previously had been employed by supplying not only churches but people's homes, needed a way to make a living. Thus, the craft of making Papier-mâché decorative boxes and panels developed, the items were lacquered and then hand painted by the artists, often with scenes from folk tales.
It is a lengthy and tedious process. Made in 1969 by a famous artist Turin Nikolay Dmitrievich, (signed on the bottom) in Palekh style of painting - which is one of the four Russian Lacquer Art legendary centers along with Fedoskino, Kholuy and Mstyora.Turin comes from a family of well known Palekh artists - his father, grandfather and uncles. The condition of the box is very good - very minimal patina, one corner is slightly scuffed, barely noticeable. Would make a great gift or an addition to a collection. Dimensions: 4.75" x 3.75" x 1. The item "Very Rare 1969 Vintage RUSSIAN LACQUER BOX Palekh Scheherazade by TURIN" is in sale since Thursday, July 13, 2017.
