This painting received great attention in the exhibition of 1824, earning Venetsianov a real reputation. Soon, the Emperor Nicholas I r.1825 - 1855 named him "court painter". Alexei Gavrilovich Venetsianov (1780 - 1847) was a Russian painter known for his depictions of peasant life and scenes of rural Russia. He began to study art in St. Petersburg, copying works in the Hermitage. He caught attention of Vladimir Borovikovsky and became his apprentice. He became a memeber of the Academy of Arts in 1811. In 1819, he acquired the village of Safonkovo, settling there, and painting scenes of local life, ignoring the academic practices of portraiture and historical painting. Venetsianov was killed in an accident in 1847, and his works became a part of the Russian cultural patrimony. The box is in very good vintage condition.
